Rihanna shared her experience meeting Jay-Z in an earlier appearance on The Tyra Banks Show, at a time when she was 17, the video of which has gained traction recently.
During the interview, the “Diamonds” singer remembered how it was to audition for the Def Jam label back in 2005. She stated that the atmosphere in the office was extremely “warm and welcoming.” Rihanna also credited Jay-Z and the label for helping her release her breakout hit “Pon de Replay” in the video.
"He said, 'We don't sign songs here; we sign artists,' and there was this little pause," Rihanna added. "I was nervous and then he said, 'and we're interested' and there was this sudden feel of relief," she further revealed. The video then sees Banks inquiring Rihanna if Jay-Z said anything “about a window and a door.”
The Barbadian musician replied, “Then he said there are two ways to leave here: Either through the door with the deal signed or through this window, and we're on the 29th floor.” This revelation in the video has generated a huge controversy, with many criticizing Jay-Z’s contentious remarks to Rihanna.
Nevertheless, it seems that the two celebrities have long squashed this beef. Jay-Z exited Def Jam in 2008 in a bid to open his very own label, Roc Nation. Notably, Rihanna signed a contract with Roc Nation in 2014, releasing her 2016 album Anti under the label.
Currently, Jay-Z is battling a civil lawsuit for raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000. Despite the backlash, the singer has denied all wrongdoing in the case.
