Sony Pictures has set a January 16th 2026 release date for “The Bone Temple,” the second film in the upcoming “28 Years Later” trilogy.

Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” will debut in cinemas on June 20th and had its trailer premiere the other week to a rapturous response. The title serves as a follow-up to the “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later” films from the 2000s.

Nia DaCosta (“Candyman,” “Hedda”) helms ‘Bone Temple’ which is again being penned by Alex Garland while Boyle is producing and actor Cillian Murphy is executive producing.

Actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes, who star in “28 Years Later,” return for “The Bone Temple” which was shot essentially back-to-back with the first film.

Story details for that second film remain under wraps. Meanwhile the third film still doesn’t have a title or director so hasn’t gone into production.

That first film takes place almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory. One group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway.

When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

"28 Days Later" was released in 2002 and starred Murphy, then largely unknown. Boyle directed the feature, while Garland wrote. A sequel, "28 Weeks Later," was released in 2007.
