"Scream 7" Director Honors Late Wes Craven as Sequel Begins Filming: He 'Was on My Mind Through It All'

Kevin Williamson is enjoying being in the director's chair for Scream 7.

The franchise's creator raved about his experience on set of the upcoming sequel, sharing his thoughts alongside an image of a film slate marking "Day One" that he posted on Instagram Tuesday, Jan. 7.

"I'm not supposed to post about Scream and I hope @spyglassmediagr and @paramountpics will forgive me but when you have one of the best days of your life it's really hard to keep it to yourself," Williamson, 59, began his caption.

He went on to share that he had "an extraordinary day" of "working with an amazing and talented cast and crew," who "brought their 'A' game and had my back every step of the way."

Shouting out the original 1996 film's director, Williamson concluded, "I'm so very grateful for this opportunity and to Wes Craven who was on my mind through it all. The profound impact he has had on my life and career is endless. What a day! I can't wait for tomorrow!"

After Craven's death in 2015, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed and Scream(2022) and Scream VI (2023).

Williamson, who wrote the original 1996 movie, was confirmed as director of the seventh film in March 2024 by franchise veteran Neve Campbell, who also announced her own return as Sidney Prescott.

Aside from his writer credits on the original Scream and the sequels Scream 2 (1997) and Scream 4(2011), Williamson also wrote 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer. He made his directorial debut in 1999 with Teaching Mrs. Tingle, and is also known as the creator of the teen drama series Dawson's Creek.

Aside from Campbell, 51, Anna Camp, Celeste O'Connor, McKenna Grace, Asa Germann and Sam Rechner have also joined the cast, along with Isabel May in the role of Campbell's onscreen daughter.

Mason Gooding, who previously appeared in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, is also set to return. Courteney Cox has also officially signed on to reprise her veteran role of Gale Weathers, according to Variety.

Per Campbell's script shared on social media, the upcoming film was written by Guy Busick with a story by Busick and James Vanderbilt, both of whom worked on 2022's Scream and Scream VI.

Scream 7 is in theaters Feb. 27, 2026.
