A Belhaven University sophomore has unexpectedly died after returning home from her track and field team's first outdoor meet of the season.

On March 1, Natalie Black, 19, from Terry, Miss., returned from Clinton to her family home having beaten her triple jump personal record — reaching 11.01 meters and winning second place in the category, local news outlet WLBT reported.

She lay down on the couch to take a nap following her day of athleticism but never awoke, according to the outlets.

"We had an amazing last day with her Saturday," Natalie's mom, Formeka Black, wrote on Facebook. "From morning till night, we all had an amazing day with her… she was so happy! That smile man!! She made the best triple jump record she ever had, beat her personal record!!

"And later into the night, still celebrating with family, she simply laid on the couch for a little nap and never woke up. I THANK GOD. There was no suffering. HE gave us that much Grace!" Formeka added.

An obituary shared by Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home said Natalie was born to Toiwarn Black, Sr. and Formeka Phillips in Jackson on Jan. 9, 2006.

Formeka spoke to WLBT, saying, "When she comes in the room, the energy shifts. She's so positive and loving."

"She used to always say 'You have to live, Mom,' and she's right," Formeka added. "And that baby lived her life big and happily and joyously."

Friends, teammates and family gathered to remember Natalie with a candlelit vigil on the Belhaven track on March 8, according to the outlet.

"She was so sweet, with the biggest smile. It was very warm, she made you feel like you were welcome and comfortable always around her," close friend and teammate Terra Kelly told WLBT at the event.

"Anytime you're going to be around Natalie, you're going to laugh. She's such a kind person," teammate Courtney Adam added.

Before an honorary lap around the track, Natalie's dad Toiwarn said it was possible to "feel the love" from all those who had gathered at the candlelit vigil.

Belhaven University also shared a photo of Natalie Black on Instagram as they shared in mourning the promising athlete.
