Revealed: The King's first words to his new Prime Minister

For the first time, Buckingham Palace has given a glimpse of the meeting in which The King appointed a new Prime Minister.

Sir Keir Starmer went to the Palace after winning a landslide in the general election. King Charles III received him to ask him to form a new government.

Usually, this meeting is private although a photo is usually released afterwards. However, in a break with tradition, video of the audience has now been shared.

And it reveals that The King was most concerned for his new PM. Charles III’s first words to Sir Keir were ”you must be exhausted”.

The Prime Minister had been up all night. Polls closed at 10pm on July 4th and he then had to head to the count for his own seat while it soon became clear that the Labour party had also scored a landslide victory in the polls.

King Charles also commented on the huge amount of work the PM had to get through in his first day in office – after meeting His Majesty, Sir Keir headed to Downing Street to deliver his first address to the nation before appointing his Cabinet.
