Jeremy Roach's decision to leave Duke after four seasons came as a surprise to many fans. As a key player, he played a crucial role in their success. However, after the 2023-24 season, Roach entered the transfer portal and transferred to Baylor, and his exit has sparked speculation.
Here’s why Jeremy Roach left Duke
Jeremy Roach made the decision to leave Duke after four seasons and enter the transfer portal following the 2023-24 season. While he received interest from multiple programs, including Arkansas, St. John’s, Kentucky, Villanova, and Syracuse, he ultimately committed to Baylor, making his announcement via Instagram.
Roach explained his exit in an interview with The Field of 68, stating that while he initially wanted to stay at Duke, things didn't go as expected. He said, “Personally, I wanted to stay. But stuff didn’t meet up, and it was just my time to go. I did my four years, sacrificed a whole lot, and I made the most of it. It was no hard feelings or anything like that. It was all cool."
He further described the decision as mutual, noting that Duke head coach Jon Scheyer was already aware of what was coming. A key reason for his transfer might have to do with his role on the court. At Duke, Roach played as a shooting guard, but he saw himself as a natural point guard. Baylor offered him the chance to return to that position. Roach stated, “I’ll let the whole world know right now. I’m not a scoring guard. I’m a point guard. That’s just what I had to do at Duke. Right now, I’m a point guard. It’s great to get back to what I do."
Roach played an important role at Baylor, helping the team secure a 19-14 record with a 10-10 mark in conference play. Now, he faces his former team as Baylor takes on Duke in the NCAA Tournament's second round.
