Moni is a Motonui historian and member of Moana and Maui‘s wayfinding crew in Moana 2, who is a massive fan of the latter. He is also known for being a very passionate storyteller. The voice actor behind Moni is Hualalai Chung, a Polynesian actor who has appeared in other notable projects like Rescue: Hi-Surf and NCIS: Hawai’i.
Chung, in an interview with the Today Show, revealed he hails from a family of performers. He has also been a fire-knife dancer since he was three. Moreover, he and his family are also lifelong fans of Disney films. He also mentioned that his mother was the most surprised and happy when she learned of his casting in Moana 2. Furthermore, he expressed pride in playing Moni, as it allowed him to represent his culture and people.
In the interview, Chung described Moni as “everyone’s best friend.” He also claimed that the character was “whimsical, warmhearted, and fun-loving.”
The other members of Moana’s wayfinding crew besides Moni are Loto, Kele, and Moana’s pet pig and rooster, Pua and Heihei. Loto is the brains of the crew, who often works on their ship, while Kele is a grumpy farmer who is also the elder statesman of Motonui.
The film, which is currently playing in theaters, has been helmed by Dana Ledoux Miller, Jason Hand, and David G. Derrick Jr. The voice cast comprises Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson in the lead roles.
