Warners Planning A "Game of Thrones" Film

Warner Bros. Pictures has reportedly been quietly developing at least one film set in George R.R. Martin’s epic “Game of Thrones” fantasy universe.

The project is said to be very early in development right now so no-one is attached – no director, writer or cast members. However the studio is seemingly keen on getting a Westeros story into cinemas.

That marks a change from when ‘Thrones’ was on the air. Prior to the pandemic, and to Discovery’s purchase of Warners, HBO strongly resisted the idea of any film tie-ins as they wanted to preserve the show’s HBO property status as prestige television.

A lot has changed since then. Long delays on the next book and a poorly-received final season have taken some of the shine off the franchise which the spin-off “House of the Dragon” hasn’t been able to restore.

Multiple spin-off attempts on the small screen are underway and, while still drawing big numbers, it’s not the golden goose it once was.

Similarly, executive regime change at HBO and Warners has led to an increased willingness for properties to jump between film and television – as seen with the currently airing “The Penguin” and next month’s “Dune: Prophecy”.

One possibility that would be a draw would be a film set after the HBO series – “House of the Dragon” and all the other TV spin-offs in the works are prequels.
