Former winner and current judge of American Idol, Carrie Underwood, recently heaped serious praise on a contestant on the show, going as far as to compare her to the iconic Taylor Swift. The participant in question was 18-year-old Zaylie Windsor, who, during her audition, performed a rendition of an original song titled “The Used” and walked away with much appreciation from Underwood, as well as fellow panelist Lionel Richie.

Here’s what the eight-time Grammy winner had to say about Windsor’s act.

Carrie Underwood says American Idol contestant has ‘Taylor Swift-esque’ quality

Appearing on the March 30 episode of the reality show American Idol, Windsor decided to sing an original composition of hers that she had written four years prior following a break-up. Her performance on American Idol drew plaudits not only from Carrie Underwood but also from Richie. While giving her review on Windsor’s singing, the country singer noted, “You showed us a lot in your voice. You can go from being small and focused to, like, soaring. I'm impressed at the song, as well. I feel like you've got a lot of artistry in there.”

Despite Carrie Underwood’s words of affirmation, Luke Bryan, who is the third judge on American Idol, seemed somewhat unconvinced of Windsor’s raw talent. “Gosh, I don't think she's quite ready,” he remarked. However, an impressed Underwood decided to defend the 18-year-old contestant, stating, “My thing is, there's a Taylor Swift-esque quality that she has. She doesn't have this giant vibrato, belty voice, but there's something in there. If she did that at 14, she must have a lot of other things in her arsenal that she could bring to the table…I feel like there's something about her.”

While Bryan decided to vote no, Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie’s approval granted Zaylie Windsor an entry into American Idol Season 23.
