Barbarian director Zach Cregger has finally opened up about Sony Pictures‘ new Resident Evil movie, which will serve as the latest entry to the blockbuster action horror film franchise based on Capcom’s popular video game series. The untitled project is currently set for a September 18, 2026, theatrical release.
What did director Zach Cregger say about the new Resident Evil movie?
During a recent appearance at CinemaCon, Cregger teased what Resident Evil fans should expect from his reboot, promising a “wild ride” for the audiences. He also confirmed that his movie will be more inspired by the thrilling gameplay that the video games were known for, while assuring fans that his version will be “unlike any of the previous films.”
“There's a moment that comes in almost every Resident Evil game where you find yourself in a dark passageway, your health is almost zero, and there's no way around,” Cregger shared. “You have to go through but you know there's something awful for you in the darkness. That is a thrill that the Resident Evil games have perfected. My movie will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B as they descend deeper into hell.”
The new Resident Evil movie will be directed by Cregger, who co-wrote the screenplay with Army of the Dead and John Wick: Chapter 4 scribe Shay Hatten. At the moment, Euphoria star Austin Abrams is the only confirmed cast member for the project. However, it was recently revealed that Oscar winner Mikey Madison was reportedly in negotiations for the lead role. Both Madison and Abrams aren’t strangers to the horror genre, after respectively starring in 2022’s Scream and 2019’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
Production on is expected to begin this summer in Europe. The film is produced by Robert Kulzer for Constantin, Roy Lee for Vertigo Entertainment, and Miri Yoon, with Nicole Brown tapped to oversee the project in behalf of Columbia Pictures. It is a production by Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions.
