At WWE Elimination Chamber: Toronto, Cena shocked fans by attacking Cody Rhodes and turning heel for the first time in 20 years. When he stepped into the ring on WWE RAW, the fans erupted with several anti-Cena chants.
Firing back, Cena accused the fans of bullying him into being their puppet, forcing him to smile through everything. He declared he wasn't a babyface or a heel but a human being they had mistreated for decades. He made it clear they had earned nothing from him.

He stated, “Since I was four years old I have been a fan of John Cena. He’s been my hero for ten years now and he’s my favorite superstar. I paid to see him. When he pointed at me, it was a source of pride for me that he pointed the finger at me because I didn’t know he was going to talk down to me.
