Jude Law Likely Not Returning To Marvel

Jude Law joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” taking on the role of Yon-Rogg – an arrogant Kree commander who served as one of the antagonists towards Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers.
On one hand, Law got to play a condescending baddie with a Lovecraftian name who gets an enjoyable comeuppance later in the film and helps the lead character’s journey of self-actualisation. On the other, it’s not a particularly sizeable role and certainly not one of Law’s more memorable ones.
Law himself now says he was frustrated with Yon-Rogg. Speaking to GQ while out promoting “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” he revealed that he wanted to play up the character more, but was shot down by Marvel. As a result, he doesn’t have any real desire to return:.
“Would I do another one? Probably not… It was alright. [Yon-Rogg] was a bit dry. I wanted to be a bit funnier. I was hoping to be a bit more of a sort of mustache-twirling villain, and I think I kept coming up with ideas that were not going in this film. And so I just sort of did what I was told.”
Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck helmed the project which set the stage for the Infinity Saga’s climax with “Avengers: Endgame”. It went on to earn over $1 billion at the box-office, though reviews were only softly positive from critics while the film became one of the famous early examples of review bombing.
Law also spoke with the Associated Press and says that having built his career with the help of mid-budget films, he feels there’s a big hole in an industry that has seemingly turned its back on them:
“I mean, I feel very lucky that when I came into this business, they were making [mid-budget films], and some of those first films that I got to make with people like Anthony (Minghella), looking back now, it's remarkable that we were allowed to get away with that. But it's also an era, it's a type of film and type of storytelling that I think we miss. Giving the correct kind of budget and time and patience to stories like that is absolutely at the heart of filmmaking, and I think it's a gaping hole at the moment.”
Law can next be seen in “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” which launches this coming week on the Disney+ service.
