Gunn Talks "Batman" Villains & "Clayface" Basics

Following DC Studios clearing up its release schedule a bit yesterday, filmmaker James Gunn has given an update on two of the films on the slate.
First up is Matt Reeves’ “The Batman Part II”. With the Mike Flanagan-penned “Clayface” film having been freshly been set for a September 2026 launch, the current October 2026 release date for the Reeves-directed “Batman” sequel seems likely to be moved.
Gunn didn’t comment on the date, but he did give an update on the film’s progress after a fan on Threads asked him about a rumor that Clayface and The Scarecrow are set to be a part of “The Batman” sequel.
Gunn responded: “Firstly, no. Secondly, couldn't be the case as there hasn't yet been a first draft of a script.”
When someone pointed out an EW article which claimed that Reeves’ script was finished, Gunn said: “We don't know what that writer misconstrued to think the script was finished.”
The Reeves film is not part of Gunn's DC Universe so whatever characters are showing up there won’t be in the greater DCU.
Gunn also locked down some things about the “Clayface” film. It will be live-action, it will be an Elseworlds movie not set in the DCU. THR adds that the plan is for a ‘horror’ film with a tight $40 million budget.
Flanagan is said to be a big fan of the Clayface episodes from the original 1990s “Batman: The Animated Series” and so will likely draw inspiration from them – especially the two-part origin episode “Feat of Clay”.
