Jim Carrey has played Dr. Robotnik across all three of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” films, a role that he’s stuck with despite otherwise taking a break from acting in recent years.

With “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” Carrey took on dual roles with a secondary one playing Ivo Robotnik’s grandfather. Both the second and third film end on ambiguous notes with Robotnik’s fate unclear.

This is ideal for Carrey as it allows him to pick and choose whether to participate or not. Paramount Pictures has already greenlit a fourth film, so the inevitable question of his involvement comes up.

Speaking to Japanese YouTube channel Cinema Today recently, the actor says he’s certainly very open to coming back thanks to both the filmmaking team and the fanbase:

“I'm definitely open. I'm open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, 'that sounds fun', then I'll do it. I don't feel locked to anything in life, unless it's something that interests me.

I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. There's a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, 'how about if you do this?' They've been super helpful. I think we're all making this movie together.”

The third film has grossed $285 million worldwide so far from a budget of $122 million, with most countries not getting the film until on or just after Christmas. The movie could well surpass the second film’s $405 million total gross to be the highest earner of the franchise so far.

All three movies thus far were directed by Jeff Fowler. The fourth film in the series is currently targeting a Spring 2027 release.
