“Bros” Star Responds To Film’s Opening

Universal and Billy Eichner’s comedy “Bros” was a flop at the box-office this weekend, the film pulling in just $4.8 million over three days – half the $8-10 million amount that the studio projected days earlier. In a tweet that subsequently went viral, Eichner responded to the film’s underperformance, saying: “Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore, etc., straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for ‘Bros’. And that’s disappointing but it is what it is.” The opening though was low enough that it seems many LGBTQ viewers didn’t show up to see the film either, and so now the question has been raised as to what went wrong. A lack of star power, which is key to the few rom-com success stories in cinemas of late, is being seen as one reason. Others, such as a lengthy Reddit thread discussing this, have put the blame on the marketing which highlighted the film’s first major LGBTQ studio comedy status over the film’s actual comedy, general confusion over the title, the release window as October is generally not a good time for rom-coms, and the premieres of both “Blonde” and “Hocus Pocus 2” along with the more seasonally appropriate “Smile” taking away attention. Eichner also revealed that a theater chain had mounted plans to pull the trailer for the film from its programming due to its content, but Universal eventually convinced them to maintain its placement in the pre-show rotation. The film is expected to struggle to achieve profitability – even with a modest $22 million production budget, but the good word of mouth from those who did show up at least gives Universal some hope.
