From potential plot to returning cast members, here's what we know so far about 'Landman' season 2

Fans of Landmanhope they haven't seen the last of the patch. 

The Paramount+ Western drama created by Taylor Sheridan stars Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, a landman for an independent oil rig in West Texas who navigates the near-constant crises of lawsuits, dangerous working conditions, family drama and the fight for fortune. It premiered on Nov. 17, 2024, and is based on the 2019 Texas Monthly podcast Boomtown. 

Podcast host Christian Wallace co-created Landman with Sheridan and told Collider in November 2024 that the show remains true to the outlandish and occasionally harsh realities of working and living in an oil town. He even keeps an "ongoing list" of potential storylines based on what he hears from friends who still work on the rigs. 

"I talk to my buddies in the oil field all the time," said Wallace, who grew up in Andrews, Texas and spent a year working on drilling rigs. "They'll tell me stuff, and I'm like, 'Hold on, write that down.' Because there's yet another crazy way to die or an interesting, funny tidbit."

The season 1 finale of Landman premiered on Jan. 12, 2025, and left the fate of Tommy and other principal characters up in the air. Paramount+ hasn't confirmed a future installment of the show, but the cast and crew have vocalized their hopes to continue the story.

So, will there be a season 2 of Landman? Here's everything to know about the potential continuation of the series.

How did season 1 of Landman end?

The finale episode of Landman's inaugural season saw a major shift for Tommy's career — and the supposed death of one of the show's most pivotal characters. 

M-Tex Oil CEO Monty Miller (Jon Hamm) died after being hospitalized for a heart attack. Despite the hope his wife, Cami (Demi Moore), had for his recovery, his heart transplant surgery didn't go as planned. The finale's last minutes showed the CEO lying lifeless in a hospital bed, surrounded by Cami and their two daughters. 

Though fans questioned whether or not Monty had actually died, Wallace confirmed the character's death to Variety in January 2025. "When you take one major player off the board, it opens up opportunities for other players," the co-creator said, "and I think that's all I'm at liberty to say at this point."

One of those opportunities was made clear in Landman's final episode when Tommy agreed to take over M-Tex, fulfilling his boss' final wishes. Thornton told The Hollywood Reporter in January 2025 that even though his character "probably doesn't want to" lead as CEO, he'll do so out of a "debt to his old friend and boss." 

Will there be a Landman season 2?

Paramount+ has yet to confirm a second season of Landman. However, Moore said at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, that she would return to play her character as an oil tycoon's wife who has "lots of nice clothes" and hinted that filming for season 2 would begin soon.

"I thought we looked really good," The Substance actress said of her on-screen husband, per Deadline. "[Hamm] was lovely and I've known Billy Bob Thornton for a long time. I've already completed the first season and I'm excited for us to start the second which will be at the beginning of next year."

What is Landman season 2 about?

Since the future of the show hasn't been confirmed, there isn't an official synopsis for Landman season 2. But Thornton told the Los Angeles Timesthat he hopes to continue exploring his character's peculiar family dynamics and dive deeper into his new relationship with cartel boss Galino (Andy Garcia), who saved him after he was kidnapped and tortured by a local gang. 

"I would also hope that we explore the weird position that Tommy is in with Andy's character," the Goliath actor said in January 2025. "Tommy isn't dealing with henchmen anymore. He knew how to deal with them. But now he's got a smart guy on the opposite side of the law who is his equal."

He continued, "We're in a chess match, and I hope that's explored." 

Who is in the Landman season 2 cast?

Nothing has been confirmed, but Thornton and Moore have expressed interest in continuing their roles on Landman. Ali Larter, who plays Tommy's not-so-ex-wife Angela, also told Elle in January 2025 that the show's production has a timeline set for the next season. 

"I love the relationship between Tommy and Angela," the Varsity Blues actress said. "We're going to see, as the [next] season unfolds, that Angela's going to be in a different place in her life again. I think that her priorities have changed, so you'll see some of that unfolding."

Michelle Randolph, who plays Tommy's daughter Ainsley, told PEOPLE in January 2025 that she hopes her character will "evolve as a person" in the next season. 

When will Landman season 2 filming start?

Thornton told Entertainment Weekly that if Landman were renewed for a second season, filming would likely begin in February or March of 2025. However, Paramount+ has yet to confirm the show's future. 

"I understand that if we're going to do that, season 2, that it's going to be sometime around February, March, somewhere in there," he told the outlet in August 2024. "I mean, we'll see. It just depends on how the chips may fall, you never know in this business. But if we do it, I think [we're] going to try to do it around that." 

What has Billy Bob Thornton said about returning to Landman?

As far as Thornton is concerned, Tommy's story is just getting started. In a January 2025 interview with The Wrap, the 1883 actor discussed how he thinks his character will handle his new responsibilities. 

"I think Tommy's driven to make it a success, but at the same time, scared s------- right now, to take this on, and probably does not want to do it," Thornton said. "He does not want to take any kind of an executive position. And I got a feeling, if there were a season 2 [another wink] that he's going to drag a lot of the landman into it."

Where can I watch Landman season 2?

Paramount+ has not released any details about the show's renewal. But the first season of Landman is available to stream on Paramount+.
