Sambora's new song 'We'll Get By' is an ode to making it through life's challenges

Richie Sambora's latest song is an upbeat anthem of positivity — just in time for his daughter Ava's birthday!

The rocker, 65, released his new track "We'll Get By" on Friday, Oct. 4, the same day Ava turned 27.

"'We'll Get By' was written about the positive attitudes of us getting by the challenges and opportunities of the future," Sambora tells PEOPLE.

The track is all about making change in the world, and in a nod to his daughter, whom he shares with ex-wife Heather Locklear, includes the line, "If you see through your children's eyes, you see they see a different life."

A source tells PEOPLE Sambora wrote the song about realizing the importance of Ava's generation, and the ways in which younger folks tackle real-world problems.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer — who left Bon Jovi in 2013 in order to focus on raising his daughter — celebrated Ava's birthday earlier this week with some "quality, father-daughter one-on-one time," the source adds.

Ava, who revealed her engagement to fiancé Tyler Farrar in in February, announced in May that she'd graduated from the University of Southern California with a master of science in marriage and family therapy.

A source told PEOPLE in June that she's "possibly looking to pursue her Ph.D in psychology," and that Sambora was "so incredibly proud of her for following her dreams."

"Being a great father is a life sentence and one Richie considers one of life's greatest gifts and accomplishments. She's the apple of his eye," the source added. "That's what he lives for — his daughter and his fans and his family."

"We'll Get By" is just the latest release for Sambora, who in recent months has shared a slew of new singles, including "I Pray," "Livin' Alone," "Songs That Wrote My Life" and "Believe (In Miracles)," which he put out in April and May.

In a statement, Sambora said he was at a point in life where he was "truly happy and a big part of that joy comes from writing songs and making music."

"Everybody is loving [the new music], which makes me so happy," he added to PEOPLE at an event in May.
