Rescuers Save Two Puppies Thrown From Dog River Bridge into 'Cold Waters Below'

The Mobile, Atlanta, community quickly collaborated to save two puppies after an unknown individual threw them from a bridge into a frigid river.

In a Facebook post shared Saturday, Dec. 28, Daphne Search and Rescue said two "puppies are safe after being thrown from the top of the Dog River bridge into the cold waters below."

The social media post — shared over 1,000 times as of Monday, Dec. 30 — shows two Daphne Search and Rescue team members smiling as they hold the young dogs, who are wrapped in towels to keep them warm. 

Witnesses who spoke with WKRG about the upsetting incident said that around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 28, they observed the driver of a black SUV park their vehicle on the Dog River Bridge, turn on their hazard lights, and toss both animals from the top of the bridge to the river below.

The top of Dog River Bridge is 73 feet above the river's surface, according to Waterway Guide.

The news station added that moments after the puppies hit the water, upset onlookers grabbed kayaks to paddle out and help the little dogs, and they contacted the local authorities for help.

According to Daphne Search and Rescue's social media post about the dramatic moment, the team worked with the Mobile Police Department to execute the rescue. PEOPLE contacted Daphne Search and Rescue for additional information but did not immediately hear back.

The Mobile Police Department is investigating the cruel abandonment of the two puppies. Anyone with information regarding the person or persons responsible is asked to contact the MPD at (251) 208-7211.
