"My husband and I, we built a wonderful friendship, and there's an ease that you feel with a friend," former first lady Michelle Obama said of her husband, former president Barack Obama
Michelle Obama is weighing in on the latest season of The Later Daters — and offering her best relationship advice.
The former first lady, 60, gave her "hot takes on dating and relationships" in a video with Netflix after the premiere of The Later Daters. As executive producer of the new series, Obama reacted to some of the more awkward dates while encouraging single adults not to give up on love.
"If you're gonna be out there dating, you're gonna kiss a few frogs," she said after watching a clip where one of Anise's dates asks if she "had any work done."
"You know, I'm sure that gentleman is lovely, he's a handsome man — a little rusty on his game. But she didn't tear him down, she was very graceful. He probably didn't even know what he did wrong. That's why I said next season, he needs the dating coach!" Obama said of the moment, referencing dating coach Logan Ury.
The next scene was Nate, a paratrooper who viewers met in episode 1, explaining his story to Ury. When he says he and his ex, with whom he has a child, are "best friends," Obama noted that was a good thing to look for in his next relationship.
"Friendship is everything," she explained. "Sustaining a relationship, a marriage or anything over time, I mean, you've gotta like more about that person than how they look. My husband and I, we built a wonderful friendship, and there's an ease that you feel with a friend that you don't feel with somebody you think is a potential romantic partnership, so you let different versions of yourself show. You're not trying to show up as somebody else."
"With a friend, you are truly yourself," added Obama, who has been married to the 44th U.S. President Barack Obama for over 30 years and shares two daughters, Malia and Sasha, with him. "So I think friendship is crucial."
In a third clip, Pam discusses one of her dates with her daughter, which Obama felt was heartwarming to watch.
"See this is what I love about the show," she began. "How many intergenerational conversations have gone on in kitchens all over the country with grandchildren [and] children trying to ferry their elders through the dating process?"
When Pam expresses hesitancy to be the first to initiate a second date, Obama said it is important for both people to be straightforward from the beginning.
"Be clear about your intent — that you wanna date, you don't wanna hook up, but you wanna go out," she advised. "We love that. We love, as women, a man that knows what he wants."
After the show's premiere on Nov. 20, Obama took to her Instagram to celebrate its release and share words of inspiration for anyone looking to re-enter the dating world.
"I'm so proud to have been an executive producer of @highergroundmedia's latest series – The Later Daters," her caption read. "I believe that we all deserve a chance at finding love and happiness – no matter how old we are. I hope you'll check out The Later Daters, now streaming on Netflix, over this holiday weekend!"
