After her ex-boyfriend Matt showed up unexpectedly in New Zealand, Jenn Tran had to decide on the Aug. 5 episode of The Bachelorette whether to keep him around.

"It definitely has me even more confused now," Jenn, 26, told host Jesse Palmer.

Jenn let her remaining suitors know about Matt's arrival. "He wants to be with me and he wants to join this journey," the physician assistant student said. "I mean, there's a lot of feelings, there's a lot of things going on. So Matt is here tonight, and I do need to talk to him. So, I will be right back."

Jenn went to touch base with 27-year-old Matt, who told her, "I'm just not ready to let it go."

That left Jenn feeling "torn," she said.

Then, Matt entered the room with the other guys to inform them of Jenn's decision.

"She let me know her future's in this room," Matt told the men. "She feels confident that you guys can offer her something I can't, and I'm just here to apologize. I'm not here to take anything away from your experience."

The men felt relived, and Sam M. told Matt as much. "I'm glad you're going to stay in the past, my boy," the contractor, 27, said.

Jenn rejoined the group after Matt departed and explained to them why she decided to send Matt packing. "It was all the right things but said by the wrong guy," she said. "Looking around this room. I know that the right guy is in here."

At the rose ceremony, Jenn extended roses to Grant, Jeremy, Jonathan, Spencer, Dylan and Austin, meaning Thomas and John went home.

FIRST ONE-ON-ONE DATE

Jenn took Jonathan, 27, up in a helicopter for her first one-on-one date of the week. The creative director didn't love the idea, but with Jenn's help, he pushed through.

"You helped me get through that more than you know," Jonathan said to Jenn.

The helicopter brought the couple to a winery where Jenn and Jonathan played hide-and-seek and took a dip in the hot tub.

At dinner, Jenn proposed a toast to "getting to know each other a lot deeper," and Jonathan opened up about trust issues he had from a relationship with a woman who he claimed would "self-medicate and abuse alcohol."

"It absolutely destroyed me to my core," Jonathan said.

Jenn understood. "I can relate to you more than you know," she said to Jonathan. "I did have a toxic ex-boyfriend in the same way, gaslit me all the time and was manipulative. I think when you're in an emotionally abusive relationship, it really takes a toll on you."

Jonathan also talked about growing up with a single mom and Jenn said she could relate because her dad walked out on her and her mom.

"I felt like, growing up, I had to put on a stronger front because if I broke down, like, who was going to take care of me?" Jenn said to Jonathan.

Jenn ended the date by giving Jonathan a rose.

GROUP DATE

Devin, Sam, Marcus, Spencer, Jeremy, Dylan and Austin went with Jenn on a sheepherding date and whoever farm owners Dianne and Richard named the Most Valuable Farmer would score some extra time with Jenn. The guys struggled to find the gate to herd the sheep through, but eventually figured it out and then they cut dingleberries off the sheep.

Dianne and Richard named Devin, 28, the winner, which made Austin, also 28, worry about not having spent enough time with Jenn since he was the only man who hadn't received a one-on-one or group date rose. During the afterparty, Austin decided to pull himself out of the running before Jenn did.

"I feel like I've been playing catchup this whole time. I really do," Austin told Jenn. "You have some amazing guys here that are ready to give you absolutely everything that you deserve, and with the way that things have gone for me in this journey, I don't think that I could do that."

"What are you saying?" Jenn asked.

Austin clarified, "I'm saying I don't think it's fair to you and I don't think it's fair to the other guys that I continue this journey with you."

While Jenn said she found that to be "a bit of a shock," she ultimately accepted Austin's decision and walked him out.

However, Austin's departure made Jenn second guess herself. "Am I just doing a bad job?" she wondered to the cameras. "I want to be enough for somebody and it seems like I wasn't enough for Austin."

Jenn told the rest of the guys how she felt about Austin leaving. "I think it just brought up a lot of feelings today of me not feeling good enough," she told the group, adding that she pondered "a future in which I end up alone."

Sam M., Marcus, 31, and Devin all comforted Jenn when they spoke to her privately, and because of everyone's support, Jenn decided she didn't feel right giving out a group date rose to just one man.

SECOND ONE-ON-ONE DATE

Jenn headed to Muriwai for a horseback riding date with Grant, 30. Afterwards, they sat outside and sipped champagne when it started to rain — only for a rainbow to later appear.

Grant told Jenn that he heard about her challenging night after the group date and wanted to comfort her.

"You don't have to be perfect with me," the day trader told Jenn. "I'm not perfect, you're not perfect, that's when you know that it's love."

Grant also spoke to Jenn during the evening portion of their date about his relationship with his father, who he described as an addict for 30 years.

"He always used to be inebriated or intoxicated under the substance and the worst thing is I didn't know," Grant said to Jenn. "When you're a child, you believe everything, you know what I'm saying? The one person I trusted the most was always lying."

Grant shared that at the time of filming, his dad was almost two months sober. "My mission in life is to the be the man that my father wasn't," Grant added.

Jenn told Grant how she grew up without a male role model because her dad left and that led to her entering a toxic relationship with a man who dismissed her by telling her things such as "racism was fake and it's all in people's head."

"I encourage you to always speak your mind," Grant said to Jenn, adding, "I'm in your corner."

Jenn gave Grant a rose after telling him that she thought their discussion during that "amazing day" was "really rare and special to me."

ROSE CEREMONY

Grant came back from his date with Jenn and told the guys he thought he was falling for The Bachelorette. Overwhelmed with emotion, Grant cried to Jonathan about his strong feelings for Jenn. But not all the guys appreciated Grant's relationship milestone.

"Grant made the mood more tense and emotional," Jeremy, 29, told the cameras.

Jenn decided to cut the cocktail party and head right to the rose ceremony where she gave roses to Devin, Marcus, Jeremy and Spencer, 30, and sent home Dylan, 24.
