A Florida grandfather is dead after an alleged altercation about music with his neighbor on Thanksgiving, authorities said.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that Hureleyon McLean was shot and killed in Lauderdale Lakes on Thursday, Nov. 28, and his neighbor was detained by police.
According to the release, deputies arrived on the scene around 3:30 p.m. local time, when they found McLean, 71, "suffering from a gunshot wound." He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said its initial investigation found that McLean was shot during an "altercation" with his neighbor — who authorities did not identify.
The neighbor in the incident "cooperated with detectives" and claimed during an interview that he shot his neighbor out of "self-defense," police said.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Broward County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit detectives.
Once the investigation is complete, police said "the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney's Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed."
Hureleyon's wife, Rose McLean, told WSVN-TV, WPLG-TV and The New York Post that she and her husband had been celebrating Thanksgiving with family and friends when the incident happened. She said their neighbor, who was in an apartment one floor below theirs, approached them to complain that their music was too loud.
"He came up there to ring the doorbell and leave a message," Rose said to WSVN-TV, detailing that her husband then went downstairs to talk with the neighbor, before she said she heard a gunshot.

"He was just standing, looking at me with his gun in his hand," Rose told the outlet. "And I go up to him and say, 'Why did you shoot my husband? Why?' And he said to me, if I didn't shut my mouth, he would shoot me too."
Rose said that Hureleyon, a father of two grown sons and a grandfather, worked as a bus driver for a private company.
"Anywhere he is, I'm always with him. We're like a team together. For him to be taken away like this, trust me, it's very hard," Rose told WSVN-TV and the Post.
