THE clocks spring forward in the early hours of Sunday to give us lighter evenings as we switch to summer time.

Brighter days make us all feel a little more upbeat but can also save you some cash.

Here's how you can use the extra light to cut costs . . .

GYM O'CLOCK: Lighter evenings make it easier to get outside to burn some calories for free.

Try ditching a pricey gym membership and instead use the outdoor exercise equipment at your local park.

You could also head out for a run, organise a kick-around with friends or book a tennis session at your local courts.

DINNER DATE: Meeting mates for dinner or down the pub can drain your finances.

Instead, pack up some blankets and find a spot at a local park or even beach, if you're lucky enough to live close to a seafront.

Get your favourite takeaway or make your own food to save even more cash.

CHEAP COMMUTE: Cycling home from work feels safer and more appealing when it is light outside. Plus, riding your bike is far cheaper than driving or jumping on a train.

Use cyclinguk.org/journey-planner to find cycle-friendly routes. In London you can pay £20 a month for unlimited 60-minute rides on Santander Cycles with docking points throughout the city.

CUT BILLS: Lighter evenings give ample opportunity to cut your energybills.

Open blinds to make the most of natural daylight and avoid switching on lights.

Or swap an hour of TV in the evening for reading outdoors. Extra daylight can also be used to dry clothes rather than the tumble drier.

GROW VEG: If you have outdoor space, why not spend an hour in the evening cultivating a veg patch. You don't need lots of space and can cut food costs with your harvest.
