The research was commissioned by IRN-BRU and FUNKIN Cocktails which has collaborated on a new Vodka Martini cocktail.

To mark its launch, the two brands have transformed some of the nation's not so smooth messages into art by Babak Ganjei – swapping the soft drink's bubbly fizz for a new smooth velvety texture.

The art can be enjoyed in pop-up galleries in London and Glasgow this weekend, alongside a can of the new cocktail.

Ashley Birch-Ruffell at FUNKIN said: “Not everyone is a message maestro and our research shows the majority of us have experienced a heavy dose of cringe when chatting by text.

"Babak has turned these fails into fine art and we're so pleased to be able to share it."

The study found 70 per cent have wanted to “crawl into a hole” because of a cringeworthy text.

Steamy DMs rank highly with almost a third confessing to having typed one, leading to more than half of sharers wishing they hadn't.

As for unfortunate consequences, 23 per cent have ended up simply feeling embarrassed, a little over one in 10 (11 per cent) have had to have a “difficult conversation” with a pal.

Kenny Nicholson at IRN-BRU said: "These galleries are a chance to embrace those cringe moments.

"To celebrate the first ever official IRN-BRU alcoholic cocktail, we wanted to take a minute to appreciate some of the not so smooth moments which the nation are navigating every day."
