How Southern Hospitality Cast Bring Bravo Diversity in an 'Organic' Way

We’ve been begging for more diversity on Bravo, and so far, the results have been mixed. You can’t just add a person of color to an all-white cast and call it a day — just ask The Real Housewives of Dallas. Fortunately, Southern Hospitality is giving us something different. We’re getting representation in an authentic way, along with a whole bunch of juicy bartender drama.
In a new interview with Parade, TJ Dinch and Bradley Carter spoke about what it means to bring their diverse perspectives to the show, and why the representation on Southern Hospitality is just as real as its drama.
Southern Hospitality checks all of the boxes
Unlike other Bravo shows that try to force relationships between strangers, the Southern Hospitality cast members are actually connected. We can thank Leva Bonaparte and her nightlife empire.
“There’s so much history and friendship that started before we even started filming season one,” TJ explained. “We have stories and history that lead up to emotions that are happening within seasons one, two, and three.”
Although some viewers think the show is fake, TJ and Bradley believe it’s the real deal, with natural relationships serving as the key to its success. With that in mind, Bradley joked that he wasn’t specifically seeking out a gay friend when he became friends with TJ. The friendships are genuine.
“It’s not like I checked a box or something, it’s organic and real,” Bradley told the outlet.
It’s also noteworthy that a show taking place in the South is giving us this colorful cast. On Southern Charm, it took years for them to add a Black woman to the group. Bradley has been on this show since the beginning, and this season, we’ve got Lake Rucker and Michols Peña rounding out the cast.
Bradley explained, “It’s fun having someone that looks like you in the same space as you, and also showcasing Charleston, which is in the deep south.”
Southern Hospitality airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on Bravo.
